more spring a lings....
last thursday night, i had the pleasure of hosting a "secret" (no too secret as it turned out,
twitter n all) show with nas & damian marley to celebrate the release of their new
collaboration album titled "distant relatives" produced by myspace music at the roxy in
hollywood. cut chemist opened the show with his mind boggling one turntable dj set - he
mixes by sampling one record with a sample pedal on the ground, tapping his feet to
capture a loop, then throwing on the next record and so on. he has new mix cd forthcoming
called "sound of the police" that will employ the one turntable method. dude is phenomenal.
see how he does it here: http://tinyurl.com/2vso9uc. also, the roxy posted a couple of
videos of nas & damian's performance here: http://theroxyonsunset.com/?p=3043. big up
treklife & dj jp for workin hard in the dj booth.
nas & damian's album carries a much needed message and is produced beautifully - hip hop
& reggae in a functional marriage. amazon link: http://tinyurl.com/24ouds3

this past saturday me n wifey stuffed the kids and some of their cronies into the chevy and
mashed to the fowler museum at ucla for a special kcrw presentation of nick cave's very
intricate and whimsical art exhibition. the night was dubbed "soundsuits after dark" and it
was a ball! an exquisite arts carnival is a fitting description. from the free admission, the
incredible art, and the fam friendly activities, to the food trucks, and the music of course,
the night was another example of kcrw's profound affect on the community at large. 7k
people, all ages, all colors, altogether in amusement. nice recap & photos here:

pollyn. great young band out of lala land. their sound is difficult to describe, but it's filled
with classically trained jazz musician chops and modern electro-avant-pop-cinematic-score
vibrations. they celebrate a new mix presented by kitsune noir with a special show this
weekend. peep details below and enjoy the download - great cover of suzanne vega's classic

lust, desire, narcissism...
i just fumbled across this piece that appeared last year in The Independent (UK), by john
walsh & catherine townsend. below is an outtake. i dug the whole article. thought i'd share.
link below.
"Women would be amazed if they knew what men desire about them. Yes, of course, they
want to see women naked and supine and melting, but male desire is far more readily
stimulated by what the oblique glance discovers: the parted lips, the micron of eyelash
which the mascara brush missed, the changing angle and shadow of cleavage, the bra-strap
alternately displayed and covered up, the ripe-camembert plumpness at the edge of hips.
There is, inside every adult man, a relentless Peeping Tom, a perennial 14-year-old boy, still
amazed by the phenomenon of women on display, flagging their sexuality, their availability,
with every square inch of visible flesh, clothing, make-up and curve.
We desire the personality that we discern in the walk, the clothes, the laugh… We look, and
sigh, and wish to do certain things to her, first urgently, then luxuriantly, and keep doing it
indefinitely; but we also hunger to have her do certain things to us, unimaginable though it
may seem—we want her to want us. We don’t just want her surrender, like a slave captured
in battle; we want her approbation, her adoration; we want to enchant her to desire us
back. For, no matter how humble we feel before the dizzying fact of female beauty, men are
just as narcissistic as women."

back from coachella. rolled with my ace malakhi aka malakinetics.com, who brought the
snacks and snapped some pics. highlights for me included the air conditioning in the amex
zync zone tent, where select kcrw djs got to spin for respite seeking vip-ers, flying lotus'
earth-rumbling set, hearing de la soul, the xx, and hot chip from the parking lot, the colorful
& creative do-lab tent, and of course the young ladies flaunting their goodies, save the
bright colored pasties (photos not included). lowlights include missing friday and most of
sunday - gil scott heron, gorillaz, etc. broke out early so i could spin with buck-wild dj

wowzers, it's 2010. the majority suffer while the minority rule. this has always been. some
of us have the audacity to believe this can change while refusing, ignoring, denying the very
flaws within that contribute to the ancient, cyclical ills of humanity. those of us with sound
minds intact are accountable for our attitudes and actions - the only things we can truly
control. remember the MJ song "man in the mirror"? at one point in life it was a cute song
that inspired me to do a few more chores as a teenager. only now as a grown up, married
with children, am i beginning to understand.
my prayer is to begin this new decade with daily focus on my role as a lover - of my wife,
my children, people. the holy books say God is love. most times the world presents a
different definition; a more surface, romantic, hollow version of love. i have been forgiven
for the worst kinds of offenses. i am severely flawed, but loved unconditionally. i want to
express that kind of love. love in that i'm not only willing to die for another, but even more
willing to lay down my life, to lose it, in order to live for another. self sacrifice. true love.
if everyone was concerned with making sure others were taken care of, no one would need
to take care for themselves. imagine it.
happy new year everybody!
speakin' of love, i can't say it enough...i love my job. below, a couple of images from the
mojamoja pre-grammy brunch. thanks to the mojamoja crew, the ridiculous line up of
talent that donated their time, the wonderful volunteers, the w hotel staff, all our sponsors,

next up, one of my oldest dreams came true last week, thought i'd share...
New York always treats me right. This time it spoiled me somethin' wonderful. I was
graciously invited to Jazz at Lincoln Center to hear the long awaited new album from Sade
titled "Soldier of Love", along with a few industry heavies. Ok, I thought, but perhaps I'd
wait for the advanced copy in the new year. After all, it gets a little chilly this time of year
out that way. Then, it was mentioned she and the band might fall by to say hello, etc. Upon
hearing that, I did whatever needed to be done to ensure my attendance. This included
dragging my family to the mall during the holiday rush to help me nab a sweater, some
gloves, and other east coast essentials that Californians don't really need.
This is a band 25 years together, with a sound that remains defiant of general category.
This is a woman who's had me and countless others vexed with her stunning beauty,
beguiling movement, and bewitching sound. She's a real live siren, a mythical creature that
appears once a decade to exercise her seductive prowess. I know I'm putting a lot on it, but
c'mon, I'm a man speaking of Sade Adu. She stands alone.
After some mingling and catching up with folks, an official looking English bloke spoke a few
words before launching into the album. I immediately excused myself from all conversation
and walked slowly to the sweet-spot in the room, the place where the sound is the warmest
and brightest. I stood, listening intently, drowning out the infamous, never ending hum of
NYC hustle-speak. The record is nothing short of exceptional. Another sumptuous round
with a champion of sound. No more than 10 cuts deep, it is filled with the classic, sonic
richness they're known for, along with a couple of minor departures that explore dance floor
worthy tempos and drum programming. I can't wait to play more of it.
The English bloke appeared again and got on the mic. The room hushed as if all in unison
were thinking "OMG, is she really here??". Before I knew it, she sauntered out,
distinguished band mates in tow. I waited patiently, trying hard not to look like an
overgrown groupie. Not sure I could help it though. Someone introduced us. The room was
loud, but when she spoke I only heard the warm tenor of her voice saying "hello" in that
deadly British timbre. She has a phenomenal smile. I thought to myself, "say something
idiot!", and I believe I uttered something like "uhh...thank you". Otherwise, I didn't speak
and just stood there with a silly, boyish grin. Luckily, I forgot to get a picture with her the
first time. Or maybe I did that on purpose, so i could be next to her twice.
Only 2 days, but my, what a trip. Saw a few old friends, made some new ones, partook of
mouth watering baby shower left overs with Padma The Glorious (whole other story), and
will cherish the day I met Ms Adu forever. Shouts to big Mike and the crew at Sony, She-
Rock, big time Stuart Matthewman, ex-west coaster Kavi, Sir Rodney & Lady Charlie, Chachi
at BOS, the Empire Hotel staff, and Padma's mom!

those that knew her. original greatness has to do with substance - knowledge, character,
grace, etc. please stop lowering standards.
as i was typing this up, late friday night, my toddler aged son slept next to me on the
couch. he started out in his sleeping bag. eventually, he wiggled himself into an interesting
knot with the bag, like he was playing twister with the bag in his sleep. further twists found
him half slung over the couch arm, then with his torso facing down on the couch with one
leg on and the other off, foot touching the floor. finally, he turned over, stretched long, and
slid entirely off the couch onto the floor into a full on squat position, head wavering, eyes

(shhhh, don't tell the wife). he just kept squatting.......yesss, i helped him out.

next up, imagine yourself on a tuesday evening at one of the most exquisite pads in venice,

i remember when summer break stretched for eons. returning classmates were noticeably
transformed. i loved seeing certain young ladies morph from ducks to swans, which typically
changed their social status. the farther i think back, the slower the motion of time perceived
- kindergarten took forever! i ponder such silliness 'cus this month marks a decade of
marriage to my superwoman-golden-lady-supreme-queen-helluva-wife. time has never
flown by with such speed. i believe that's actually a good thing in marriage, and some of
you married folks and divorcees know exactly what the hell i'm talkin' about, don't you?!
anyhoo, the following is garth letterman's top 10 reasons why (my) marriage is good:
10. my wife is hot and doesn't seem to be aging
9. my wife loves to cook, and i love to eat
8. my wife is fearless and adventurous
7. my wife tolerates me and has never kicked me out
6. my wife can fight and is handy with firearms
5. my wife is a freak (in the good way)
4. my wife saved my credit and is great with finances
3. my wife and i do special favors for each other
2. my wife's parenting skills are strangely supernatural
1. my wife and i practice self sacrifice

no, she is not a stepford wife. she's actually a fiery leo and one of the most stubborn people
i know, but we work well together. i'm a blessed sun of a gun. marriage is not for
everybody, especially these days. don't do it when you're in love & infatuation mode...wait
until the person starts to annoy you. if you find you still like the person, you may be able to
work it out. a lifetime is a loooooooooooooong time to be with one person. think about it!
up next, a little something to thank my constituency of supporters and celebrate the end of
another summer. we're doing it at club nokia's vip lounge, saturday september 5, labor day
weekend. this jam will be FREE to enter, but you can't get in without the handy dandy rsvp.
details on the way, stay posted!

lastly, something to add to your already impressive music collection. a band from new
zealand known as fat freddy's drop, just dropped their sophomore studio album titled "dr

making their way to the states for some live gigs this fall. check them out here:

srcp aka sa-ra creative partners fell by the studio this week for a session. for those
unaware, shafiq husayn, om'mas keith, and taz arnold have been bubbling beneath the
surface for nearly a decade. they are responsible for laying down rich musical textures for
the likes of jurassic 5, erykah badu, jill scott, and dr dre, while reigning supreme in
worldwide remixdom. their low frequency, bugged out style of electro-magnetic, post hip
hop, baby making space funk is an orgy of influence by greats from coltrane and james, to
sly, parliament, and deep, emotional, classic hip hop.
nuclear evolution: the age of love - the long awaited srcp album on ubiquityrecords.com, is
the scratch to the new socio-political, afro-centric itch couched in a thick, bright black lather
of ghetto consciousness, freedom, and fun. during our session, they stressed the
importance of ownership, control of product, and independence in business for the future of
the creative mass. like the wu-tang philosophy of branding and sub-branding -- wu-tang
clan as catalyst for wu solo works, srcp are doing big things individually as well - from solo
projects to major collaborations with household industry names and forrays into arts & fashion.
my hope resides in their striving for major musical achievement. i want to see them
approach their work more as musicians that break down the formulaic nature of hip hop and
electronic music production with storytelling through sound as well as lyric - to revisit the
approach of jazz fundamentals through improvisation and experimentation such as achieved
by miles davis on a monster record like kind of blue. i don't believe many new artists think
about such things, but many have the potential to care enough to go there. the tumult of
the times should spark the desire to bring about gorgeous, controversial, intense
soundtracks that bang on apathy's door. here's hoping.

cartoon by poleurs. http://www.poleurs.lu
(also called impassivity or perfunctoriness) is a state of indifference, or the suppression
of emotions such as concern, excitement, motivation, and passion. an apathetic individual
has an absence of interest or concern to emotional, social, or physical life. they may also
exhibit an insensibility or sluggishness. often, apathy has been felt after witnessing horrific
acts, such as the killing or maiming of people during a war. it has been scientifically linked
to physical and psychological distress caused by the over-burdening of the mind's decisionmaking
mechanism, induced by accelerated series of events wherein the human brain
cannot assimilate the information.

packed my bag, sat down at a booth, and waited to get my palm greased in exchange for fly
dj services rendered. a loan gentleman approached and voiced his opinion about a mary j
blige remix i played. he was none too pleased about it. he said, " i thought you were garth
trinidad". i laughed heartily and replied "garth trinidad is a dj". he was obviously in a
chemically altered state. as he sat in front of me, expounding on his position, i noticed the
classic grinding of teeth that suggests use of certain powdery substances. then, out of
nowhere appeared a baggy of white pony. he proceeded to scoop with a small utensil and
conducted a little sniffy sniffy during the conversation. i stared intently at his eyes. they
nearly popped out of his sockets each time he snorted. lord knows i've been around a few

why is black history month the shortest month of the year? i have yet to read anything that
tells that story - who, why, when, how, etc.
do you know if it wasn't for dear benjamin banneker (1731-1806) - astronomer,
mathematician, surveyor, almanac inventor, farmer, and free man - the capitol city, white
house, monuments, etc, would be on the coast instead of inland? that would have been bad
news come war time. as a lead consultant and re-designer of the original plans, he had to
convince the gentlemen in charge of why it would be wise to move the white house away

gt and grammy weekend....
this past weekend, one of my latest projects sprung to life at an event that went down as
one of the best of grammy week. saturday afternoon, the myhangsuite brunch was a
celebration of the grammy's urban alternative performance category and a fund raiser for
common's "common ground foundation". heavy d sang reggae, janelle monae danced on
tables, and macy gray played 2 live crew while people sipped mimosas and dined on a
gourmet spread. it marked the pre-launch of a web based audio/video content project that
will be thee who, what, where of this urban alternative thing worldwide.

sunday night vikter duplaix heeded the last minute call of conga room execs who wanted a
"nice" grammy after party. although i've recently stepped away from my role as co-
producer of the infamous kiss n grind parties, i was there for support, strictly in co-host and
deejay mode. who knew the staples center would re-route all car and foot traffic so no one
could have entry to the LA live complex after the grammy's? still, a few people came to vibe
to the tunes, and check out idle warship, who took the stage just before closing. shout to dj
rhettmatic!
gt on the rock tip..........
you know, i'm just a cat that loves music, all kinds. even some country music - think patsy
cline, shelby lynne. american music is black at its core anyway. since my return to
weeknights on kcrw, i've been able to add all sorts of styles to the
programming repertoire.
more electro, house, indie alt rock, etc.
with that in mind, my new favorite band is called big moves - think pj harvey meets the
police with a sip of the clash. after i do an opening set at deep's 10 year anniversary, i'm
hosting a party in venice with them as the featured band, this sunday february 15th,
presidents day weekend. that means most of you have no work or school the next day. it's
gonna be fly - me and mr french reunite to play assorted dancefloor bangers, the
decadentia canvas project will be in the house painting on models, films showing on the
patio, food and dranky dranks all night. come get off.

musica para ti....
here's the first song post. idle warship is a collab among res, graph nobel, and talib kweli.
they are the bugged out hyper-electro-hip-hop love child of debbie harry and fab five
freddy. this song, "steady" is basically a cory hart mash up (sunglasses at night). www.myspace.com/idlewarship.
enjoy!
